Fair Play - winter 2010

Picture
Winter Kids' Week is already past and it was a great experience for all involved. For the first time in Kids week history we had a two week long program, this was due to extended school holidays and the FIFA world cup. The theme for the  was: "FAIR PLAY". With this theme we wanted to speak on on the concept and understanding of FAIRNESS

Lesson Contents

On the 16th of June we collaborated with Fairplay and hosted a big event hang orange coloured flags with key messages in a tree, encouraging kids to start dreaming and thinking about their future.

Because our theme was fairplay we concentrated on a lot of practical challenges that is affecting the daily life`s of the kids in Hillbrow: We invited the teddy bear clinic to d workshop on child abuse with the kids, we also invited SANCA to do a workshop on drug abuse, their presentation to the kids was a puppet show that easily related to the kids, kids participated actively in it and key lessons was learn about the dangers of drug abuse. We also invited the Salvation Army to do a presentation for us on Human trafficking, their presence was amazing in the first week and for many of the helper`s was this a true inspiration. They also assisted with small group discussion, having small group activity with all the age groups, focusing specifically on awareness on human trafficking.  For the 2 Thursdays during the kidsweek we had “Blessing days” where volunteers were encouraged to pray for the kids and also to reach out to them.

In the afternoon we concentrated on a variety of activities ranging from hip hop dance, kwaito dance performances, fashion shows, drama and even a choir that performed during the kidsweek event. For arts and crafts we had patch making, Sasha from the music school did a workshop with 25 kids, using a plastic 2 liter bottle making a music instrument. Erica and the Boitumelo ladies had a group of 20 kids where they`ve done some dolls. The dolls were displayed as part of an exhibition at the constitutional hill. We also had an opportunity to take kids to the Johannesburg Art Gallery to be entertained on an educational tour of the arts, and also Sci-Bono where they were introduced to the practical world of science. The response of both of these activities was that it was great but also boring because some of the kids could not relate to it. For us as the coordinating committee this was a key lesson learned that we would not like to repeat again in the future.

Celebration Day

On the day of celebration we did not have a kidsweek march in streets as always because of the fairplay march that was planned for the 10th July 2010. The celebration event saw a spectacular hosting of variety activities including dancing, solo music hip & hop and kwaito starts dancing to music. We even had marimba performances and also a drama performed by the campers, Lunch was served without any incidences, which went also very well. A big thank you to Mandla and Sarah for being the MC`s for the day, and it worked out great.

Kids week Statistics

Overall we saw a minimum of between 268 to 380 kids during the two weeks event. At first we were concerned about the cold weather, but like any other kids week after the first day of activities. On the 16June we had the highest total of 407 participants; because of our youth day activities we have drawn in a big crowd of kids whom we were able to fed and also partake in the program. The second week we started of at a low but later in the stabilized between 330 – 350 kids.

Records of kid’s attendance were kept through the registration/indemnity forms and the daily attendance register that was required by each leader to full in if the child was present or absent during the day.

10 July 2010 Procession to Constitutional Hill

On this morning more or less 150 kids convened for the festival/procession to go to constitutional hill. We were accompanied by the police and had three performances on our way to constitional hill and also at the place itself. Kids that participated were able to express their art and creativity in various forms ranging from poetry, short drama performances, flags were posted at constitutional hill and also lunch were

The preparation phase:

Preparing for the winter 2010 kidsweek was very challenging. The kids week event combined with the fairplay initiative and decided on a 2 weeks kids week instead of the normal 1st week of school holidays.

For this year we decided on having interviews for helpers and also having interviews for members who wanted to be part of coordinators comm. The following helpers were chosen respectively and were assigned key duties to perform during the planning and also kids week itself.

1.      Solomon Ramafolo – Games

2.      Pasco Mukamo – Band & Praise & Worship

3.      Phindulo Muzandzi – Ministry

4.      Johan Staff – Coordinating activities

5.      Sicelo Staff – Responsible for the registration, indemnity and collecting of data

6.      Wiseman Staff –Responsible for setting up all technical equipment

7.      Bongi Staff – Assisting with ministry

8.      Virgina Staff-Assisting with Campers and Cooking for campers

We decided on meeting every Tuesday afternoon from half past 3 to 5 to have our planning meetings and also to draw up a schedule for effective planning that will lead us up to kid’s week. Part of the planning initiative and the strengthening of helpers we also decided on a helper`s preparation camp that was held at Haphororo campsite. The main objective of the camp was to strengthen the role of the helpers, getting more commitment and also to work out a floor plan. For the camp we had 30 participants and also during the camp we were able to start forming and putting ideas together about topics to be discussed. During the camp we also decided on having a opening event because kids week is two weeks we will create an opening event, where we will be displaying kids week activities so that kids can start engaging and also know what is their on offer during kids week especially in the afternoons. Their was a big focus on the world, with this in mind we were also planning around the possibility of soccer viewing, and with the multichoice donation for public viewing in mind we worked out a scheduled around the public viewing during the month of the soccer world cup.

The theme for this year`s kids week was fairplay, and it focused on issues of fairness, justice and righteousness. To strengthen the ministry impact during kids week I also invited Monique Dalka and some other previous helper`s to come and assist us during kids week. Their response was positive and they committed to being part of coordinating comm. assisting us with the organizing.
