The Marimba Band

IMG 0475The Hillbrow Music Center currently offers participants the opportunity to learn the African marimbas. The main aim of the offering is to provide children and youth access to positive after school arts and culture enrichment programs. The output of these activities has resulted in the formation of marimba groups across various age groups that can successfully entertain clients and compete at national and international festivals.

The marimba groups are currently developed under the guidance and tutelage of Themba Moyo who has taught at the Outreach Foundation since 2009. Themba is well versed in African music with a special affection for South African and Zimbabwean music. His talents have led to numerous festival awards and continual requests for appearances at a variety of government and corporate events.

More information on the South African marimba can be found in Andrew Tracey’s interesting article How the South African Marimba Came into Existence at www.kalimba.co.za/old/marimbahistory.html
