FairPlay

A collective of creative arts organisations, concerned with and dedicated to the promotion of the arts and cultural development in the inner city, have come together to work on FairPlay. This initiative forms part of the Club of Good Hope Project which is based in Germany, and is in association with Assitej South Africa.

The collective includes the Boitumelo Project, Hillbrow Theatre Project, Kids Week, the Oasis Youth Centre and the Hillbrow Community Music Centre, (projects of the Lutheran Community Outreach Foundation), Democracy Begins in Conversation, Creative Voices, Wits School of the Arts, Leselo Project and the Drill Hall.

FairPlay is a creative response to the 2010 Football World Cup which engaged children, youth and adults from the inner city of Johannesburg and beyond. There was much concern regarding the extended mid year school holiday during the 2010 Football World Cup. It begged the question: Where are the children when the adults are at play?

We have provided safe FairPlay spaces where children and youth have been involved in a variety of creative arts activities during this period. It is also an undertaking to develop the capacity of children, youth and adults to participate in transforming “unfairness” to “fairness” in their world.

The participants have experienced an exciting programme of activities during the 4 week holiday break which included drama, dance, craft and music workshops, interactive tours to Standard Bank Art Gallery, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, Newtown Heritage Trail, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, and watching football at the Hillbrow Theatre. MultiChoice generously sponsored the setting up of a “safe space” for children and youth to experience the World Cup soccer matches.

The programme culminates on Saturday the 10th of July in a procession and site specific performances. It begins from the Hillbrow Theatre, proceeds up the Great African Steps at the Constitutional Court, where FairPlay flags will be planted on the Ramparts. We finally celebrate the work at the FairPlayexhibition at Under the Ramparts at the Old Fort. The exhibition displays the work of several inner city groups (Boitumelo Project, Hillbrow Theatre Project, Hillbrow Kidsweek) and three artists (Erica Luttich, Cheryl Gage and Anni Snyman) exploring the theme of fairness and the rules of the game in life and society.

The procession will take place in partnership with Ekhaya Neighbourhood, Johannesburg Housing Company and MES (Metro Evangelical Services).

More FairPlay projects are planned to the end of 2011.
