Inner City High Schools Drama Festival ‘2010“FairPlay – transforming unfairness to fairness”
The Hillbrow Theatre Project, an initiative of the Lutheran Community Outreach Foundation (Hillbrow), is proud to announce the 6th Inner City High Schools Drama Festival ’10. The festival will take place at the Hillbrow Theatre from the 6th to the 11th of September 2010.
This year has brought much excitement to our country with the hosting of the Football World Cup and so the theme we have chosen for this year’s festival is FairPlay. We will use the festival as an opportunity for inner city youth to explore what is fair and unfair in their lives and to explore how they can empower themselves to transform unfairness into fairness. FairPlay investigates the importance, in our young democracy, to ask “FairPlay questions”, such as, what are the rules we live by?; are they fair?; who makes the rules? and who are our referees?”. Ultimately, the festival is asking how we can support each other to bring about change and fairness.
This theatre event was established to help promote drama in the inner city high schools and to contribute towards building positive attitudes within the inner city community. Through drama and other arts projects inner city learners can start to engage and deal with issues that affect them. The festival is proud to give a platform to new stories created and performed by the youth who experience life in the inner city of Johannesburg. This project also promotes dialogue between the various inner city schools to help build a strong and vibrant inner city community.
We thank the City of Johannesburg and the International Arts Alive Festival 2010 for their generous support. The Arts Alive Festival will again generously provide book vouchers from Xarra Book Shop in Newtown for each of the awards.

Inner City High Schools Drama Festival ‘09
“I am Human because I belong”
The Hillbrow Theatre Project, an initiative of the Lutheran Community Outreach Foundation (Hillbrow), is proud to announce the 5th Inner City High Schools Drama Festival ’09. The festival will take place at the Hillbrow Theatre from the 8th to the 12th of September 2008.
The theme for this year’s festival is “I am human because I belong”, a quote by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, which encompasses many themes and ideas; the most important being the development of self-worth and respect for our fellow human beings. It encompasses the ideals of the Bill of Rights and our Constitution.
We are pleased that fourteen schools, including Albert High based at the Central Methodist Church, are at present busy workshopping original plays based on this theme.
This theatre event was established to help promote drama in the inner city high schools and to contribute towards building positive attitudes within the inner city community.
